Dendritic Toolpaths

ZHCODE & co. had the pleasure of running one of the pre-conference workshops at ACADIA this year where we spent a few days extruding clay with robots courtesy of Autodesk Build Space.

On the geometry side, one of the main challenges was the generation of self-supporting toolpaths i.e. those which produce structures that don’t fall over while being printed. While we didn’t end up solving this problem in the general sense, we did manage to find some interesting families of stable structures by taking some time extrusions of the directed growth model mentioned previously. Below are a few of the more intricate examples.
